"The more positively we fantasize, the less we do - and the less successful we are."
New year, new happiness: successfully completing the renovation, finally quitting smoking or reaching your desired weight. The list of good intentions is long, but the motivation to implement them is usually short-lived. Often they are already over by January. Why is that? Not only a lack of discipline, but also our own imagination. Prof. Dr. Gabriele Oettingen is a guest in this SMP LeaderTalks episode and says: “The more we immerse ourselves in beautiful fantasies, the more our motivation to put them into practice decreases.
"We complement positive dreams of the future with a large dose of realism."
Prof. Dr. Gabriele Oettingen is one of the world's leading researchers in the field of motivational psychology. She has developed a concept that helps people to realize their dreams more realistically: the WOOP model. It stands for “Wish, Outcome, Obstacle, Plan” and combines positive thinking with a pinch of realism.
"With the WOOP model, we anchor wishes in reality."
In this issue, Oettingen also talks to Georgiy Michailov about how the WOOP method works, why it is so promising and why she believes that you can use setbacks to your advantage.
